UC IPM: UC Management Guidelines for Drip Fumigation on Strawberry
Drip fumigation with an application of chloropicrin mixed with 1,3-dichlororopropene (InLine) followed by metam sodium or chloropicrin alone followed by metam sodium are the most effective registered chemical alternatives to methyl bromide/chloropicrin fumigation in strawberry for the control of pathogens, nematodes, and weed seeds. Because chloropicrin and 1,3-dichloropropene are less volatile than methyl bromide, they can be applied to raised beds through drip irrigation systems and have been shown to be as effective in controlling soilborne pathogens and most weed seeds, resulting in comparable strawberry yields.

Chloropicrin Applications for California Strawberries | Ozone Depletion - Regulatory Programs | U.S. EPA
Chloropicrin Applications for California Strawberries Preplant soil treatment with chloropicrin (trichloronitromethane), alone, or in combination with other soil fumigants and pest control measures, can be used by strawberry growers as an alternative methyl bromide. Currently, there is widespread use of methyl bromide formulations that typically contain 33 percent chloropicrin for preplant fumigation treatments of strawberry nursery and production fields.

Daily HeraldStrawberry growers in Ventura County, Calif. , say new pollution rules will choke production Eds: Moving on general news and financial services. AP Photo LA101, LA105 By JACOB ADELMAN Associated Press Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) - Edgar Terry says the biggest threat to his hundreds of acres of strawberries isn't bugs or bad weather. Instead, he says, it's a new regulation aimed at reducing pollution from the pesticides he uses to boost production and quality on his Ventura County farm. Beginning this spring, Terry and other growers must cut smog-causing fumigant use by as much as half to help the Southern California county that produces a quarter of the nation's strawberries comply with the federal Clean Air Act. Growers have few options for replacement crops. Only strawberries, one of the state's most lucrative crops, make economic sense in the coastal area where land prices are relatively high. " If you do have to let ground go fallow, there's no other crops to grow here," Terry said. " It could be the death blow in some respects." Last year, Ventura County farmers harvested nearly 12,000 acres of strawberries valued at more than $323 million.

Avocado
AvocadoDescription The avocado tree may be erect, usually to 30 ft (9 m) but sometimes to 60 ft (18 m) or more, with a trunk 12 to 24 in (30-60 cm) in diameter, (greater in very old trees) or it may be short and spreading with branches beginning close to the ground. Almost evergreen, being shed briefly in dry seasons at blooming time, the leaves are alternate, dark-green and glossy on the upper surface, whitish on the underside; variable in shape (lanceolate, elliptic, oval, ovate or obovate), 3 to 16 in (7.5-40 cm) long. Those of the Mexican race are strongly anise-scented. Small, pale-green or yellow-green flowers are borne profusely in racemes near the branch tips. They lack petals but have 2 whorls of 3 perianth lobes, more or less pubescent, and 9 stamens with 2 basal orange nectar glands. The fruit, pear-shaped, often more or less necked, oval, or nearly round, may be 3 to 13 in (7.5-33 cm) long and up to 6 in (15 cm) wide. The skin may be yellow-green, deep-green or very dark-green, reddish-purple, or so dark a purple as to appear almost black, and is sometimes speckled with tiny yellow dots, it may be smooth or pebbled, glossy or dull, thin or leathery and up to 1/4 in (6 mm) thick, pliable or granular and brittle. In some fruits, immediately beneath the skin there is a thin layer of soft, bright-green flesh, but generally the flesh is entirely pale to rich-yellow, buttery and bland or nutlike in flavor. The single seed is oblate, round, conical or ovoid, 2 to 2 1\2 in (5-6.4 cm) long, hard and heavy, ivory in color but enclosed in two brown, thin, papery seedcoats often adhering to the flesh cavity, while the seed slips out readily. Some fruits are seedless because of lack of pollination or other factors.
